Harriet's House is a not-for-profit shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Emergency shelter services are available free of charge to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, and Non-residential services are available free of charge to all victims of domestic violence. Our staff operates through a team approach designed to help victims of abuse in a relaxed, non-institutional setting. We serve all counties, though primarily Greene, Marengo, and Sumter Counties. Victims of domestic violence are admitted to the shelter if they are in danger or are being threatened with violence and have no safe place to go. Harriet's House provides weekly support groups for in-shelter and out of shelter domestic violence victims (physical, emotional, and psychological abuse) as well as family members of domestic violence victims/survivors and homicide victims. Separate support groups are held for children of domestic violence victims/survivors. - a 24 hour crisis line - Individual and group advocacy. - Referrals to other agencies as appropriate. - Information and education about parenting, assertiveness skills, dynamics of domestic violence, health issues, legal options and more. - Children's services, including individual and group advocacy, education on substance abuse, anger management, communications skills, recreational activities, and personal advocacy. - Court advocacy program. which can provide information, referrals, and support related to court proceedings and assistance in filing for a Protection Order or for Crime Victims Compensation. - Harriet's House mantains a library of resource materials on domestic violence, and provides education on the dynamics and prevention of domestic violence.
